Tips To Help You Save More Money On Gas

Tips To Help You Save More Money On Gas

Gas prices in the world are soaring. A perfect storm of rising post-pandemic demand, seasonal price increases, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created record prices at the pump. While you can’t control the price of oil, you don’t need to feel helpless in the face of burgeoning gas costs. There’s never been a better time to improve your fuel efficiency or become a gasoline bargain hunter, and plenty of online sites and tools can help.

Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of money upgrading to a more fuel-efficient vehicle to do so, as small changes in your driving and vehicle maintenance habits can reduce your gas costs by at least a half buck per gallon, if not more.

Fill up at the supermarket

Branded fuel from petrol stations is often more expensive than at supermarket stations. Typically, petrol at supermarket pumps is a few pence cheaper per liter. Petrol is also generally cheaper in towns and cities than in rural locations.

Many supermarkets also offer loyalty cards. Drivers can collect points every time they fill up, which can be exchanged later for cashback or discounts later on. For motorists buying fuel from the same supermarket where they shop for groceries, signing up for a loyalty scheme could save money.

Choose a fuel-efficient car

If you have more than one vehicle, it’s better to drive the one that gets the best fuel economy whenever possible. The same principle applies when it’s time to buy a new car. In modern times, many brands and companies have started developing fuel-efficient vehicles, and even electric cars that consume much less fuel and are lighter on the pocket.

Keep your engine properly tuned up

The short-term costs of properly maintaining your vehicle can improve your gas mileage by an average of 4%, though results vary depending on how well your car is already running. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40%.

Check your car’s manual to know how often you should get a tune-up, as that will depend on the age and model of your vehicle. An inspection every 20,000 to 30,000 miles is commonly recommended for newer cars.

Empty boot and close windows to reduce drag

Driving a heavy car automatically increases fuel consumption, as the engine needs to work to get up to speed. Removing any heavy equipment, such as roof and bike racks will also improve efficiency and prevent drag. Driving with open windows also causes significant drag, so keeping them closed will prevent this.

Buy discounted gas cards through resellers

Gift cards are a popular choice for easy presents, but as you might expect, not all of those gift cards get used. A variety of resellers let consumers hock their unused gift cards or buy them on the cheap. However, before buying, be careful to check the actual price discount and other specifics of any card.

Save by using bicycles, public transit, and electric vehicles

Soaring gas prices provide a timely opportunity to wean yourself off gasoline-based transportation if you have other alternatives. Riding a bicycle or using public transit more often will obviously help decrease your gasoline costs. Similarly, acquiring an electric vehicle will certainly reduce your gas usage. It’s not just Tesla, Hyundai, Ford, Porsche, Audi, and many more automakers that are providing electric cars now. Additionally, you’ll be fighting pollution and climate change at the same time as you’re saving money.
